The Kalinka Balalaika Orchestra, based in South Manchester, was established in 1984, and appears to be still the only such orchestra in the U.K.
The orchestra is now a part of the newly-formed Manchester Balalaika Society, offering instrumental tuition in an exciting and absorbing genre, and the chance to perform with this unique ensemble.
Their repertoire features Eastern European music, including Russian and Ukrainian works, many of which carry a message of peace and understanding amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
